Manager Matthews hails 'big leader' Stephane Zubar
By Dorset ECHO

Monday 16th January 2017

WEYMOUTH player-manager Jason Matthews described defensive talisman Stephane Zubar as “a leader on the pitch” and admits he has been “one of the major plus points” for the Terras this term.

Zubar, who has proved to be a real hit with the club’s fans since his arrival at the end of August, picked up another sponsors’ man of the match award in the 1-1 draw with Stratford on Saturday.

The commanding centre-half and Guadeloupe international has also been given the skipper’s armband by Matthews in recent weeks – however, the Terras’ boss did state Stewart Yetton was still the club captain at the Bob Lucas Stadium.

The captaincy, which Calvin Brooks has also carried out this term, is expected to stay with Zubar when Weymouth host in-form Banbury United tomorrow (7.45pm).

Asked about the situation surrounding the armband by Echosport, Matthews said: “Zubs is a leader on the pitch and he is playing a lot of games for us, so that’s the reason behind it.

“He has been one of the major plus points this season and we need to keep building on those plus points.

“When things are tough, sometimes you need your experienced players to step up and I feel that Zubs has done that since he has come in and he is someone the lads look up to.

“I just feel that Zubs is a very big leader and it gives Calvin a chance to concentrate on his playing.”

He added: “It was a bit of a no-brainer with Yetts out of the side with his hamstring.

“Now Yetts is back, he is still club captain, but I’d just like him to concentrate on his playing.”

Weymouth face up to a Puritans outfit that are in sublime form at present, with five wins and a draw coming from their last six league clashes.

Jake Wannell will miss out with a hamstring injury picked up at the weekend and Jordan Copp is also struggling with a hamstring issue.

Mark Cooper and Ben Thomson will remain out through injury.
