Jason's happy as Jevon takes his chance

Monday 9th January 2017

WEYMOUTH manager Jason Matthews was pleased to see his decision to propel striker Conor Jevon into his starting XI at the last minute pay dividends at St Neots Town.

Jevon struck the second of the Terras' four goals in the 4-0 win, having been thrust into the Weymouth line-up at the eleventh hour.

Ben Thomson was initially set to start up front for the visitors at the Cozy Stadium but was ruled out with a side strain in the warm-up.

Matthews could have opted to bring experience into his team with the likes of Stuart Fleetwood and Stewart Yetton also among the substitutes, but he opted for Jevon, which was a shrewd move.

Asked how the call came about, Matthews told Echosport: "Thommo was struggling with his side and was 50-50. He thought he was okay and, in the end, the muscle in his side was too painful.

"We decided to go with Jevo and he took his chance quite well.

"I felt that he led the line very well and it's a credit to him as a young lad. He is someone we have had with us for a few years and I felt it was right to give him his chance."

Quizzed on why he went for the youngster, Matthews replied: "I just feel that he is a different type of forward to Yetts or Fleets, that's not saying that they couldn't do the job.

"I just felt it was right to give Jevo a chance with the goals he has scored in games."

On the contest itself, the Terras' boss said: "We took the game to them and didn't give them a kick. Fair play to the boys they did a very professional job.

"We have put in two very professional performances in the last two games and now is the time where we need to really kick on."
