Julias House childrens hospice offers a
free lifeline to Dorset life-limited and life-threatened
children and their families. Their conditions include
muscular dystrophy, severe cerebral palsy, spinal muscular
atrophy, and brain tumours. Sadly there will always be
children who are unlikely to live into adulthood, and
research indicates there are up to 200 Dorset families
with such a child. Currently Julias House is supporting
80 of these children.
The charity now has 65 nurses and carers, who visit children
in their family home on a regular basis, looking after
the childs every need. It can be a tremendous help
to know that a skilled carer will come in regularly for
a few hours to help. This takes pressure off parents and
enables them to take part in other activities.
The children can also visit Julias House on Springdale
Road, Corfe Mullen, on a regular basis throughout their
lives, where they can enjoy a wide variety of toys, arts
and crafts, specialist equipment and multi-sensory therapies.
The hospice is open four days a week and on weekends.
It currently costs £1.9m to run Julias House,
with just three per cent of this coming from the government.
The rest of the charitys essential income is generated
through the generosity of the Dorset community and the
vital support of corporate partners and charitable foundations.
Julias House is named after Julia Perks, a talented
and dedicated paediatric nurse from Dorset, who trained
at Great Ormond Street Childrens Hospital. Julia
was the first to highlight the need for a Dorset childrens
hospice but she lost her fight to cancer in 1997 before
she had the chance to see her dream come to fruition.
